A follow up to 2012's King Animal could be in the works after this summer tour, Thayil says. "Definitely, yeah," he says. "We'll take some time off and hope to be working on a record in 2015."

Yamamoto founded Soundgarden in 1984. Cornell played drums initially, but moved on to become the frontman. Two years later, Cameron joined; Ben Shepherd replaced Yamamoto in 1990.
Among the rarities on the second CD: an acoustic version of Cornell's Like Suicide, an even crunchier iteration of Fell on Black Days called Black Days III and a demo of Birth Ritual from 1991's Badmotorfinger. Live cuts on the bonus disc include Fell on Black Days and My Wave, as well as Jesus Christ Pose (also from Badmotorfinger). Spoonman gets two remixes, too.
Memories of that event influenced lyrics that became even more poignant when another friend, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, committed suicide a month after the album's release. "The emotional possibilities in the songs were now emotional realities," Cornell says in the liner notes.
Black Hole Sun, Fell on Black Days, Spoonman and My Wave have become set list staples for the band, which began a decade plus hiatus in 1997 before reuniting in 2010.
He remembers Yamamoto stopping by the studio to say hi and hearing the demo. "He immediately said, 'That's your hit.' So even he had a strong sense there was a lot of great stuff happening."

Soundgarden may have been swept up in the grunge movement along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but the band forged its own sound: a fusion of Beatlesesque flourishes, Led Zeppelin's worldly dinosaur rock and Husker Du's aggressive punk pop. Rolling Stone's David Fricke, who wrote the special edition liner notes, calls Superunknown "a heavy masterpiece of vision and backbone, a classic of American, progressive hard rock made by a band that, from the start, always aimed higher and farther than its scene, peers and competition."
"There was a lot of stuff we didn't include," Cameron says. "But it seems like in today's climate that people want to hear as much of the process as they possibly can."
Entering the studio in 1993, Soundgarden had "so much great material that we had fun with," Thayil says. "Obviously, at some point when we heard Chris' demo for Black Hole Sun, a little switch went off where we thought, 'This is a pretty strong song.' It Reebok Mens Sneakers
has a darkness and a trippiness that are both elements of our music, but at the same time there was something about it that was catchy."
The album has been buffed up for new 20th anniversary editions out today. A $20 two CD set has the remastered 16 track album and a second disc of extras including live performances, as well as demos and rehearsals from the sessions. An $80 five disc set adds two more CDs of rarities and a Blu ray, surround sound version of the album. "The low end will be beefier and the high end will be crispier. So it will jump out."
Debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart, Superunknown would go on to sell more than 5 million copies in the USA. Songs Black Hole Sun and Spoonman each won a Grammy Award, for best hard rock and best metal performance, respectively.

'Superunknown' made Soundgarden's potential known
Soundgarden played Superunknown in its entirety for the first time in March at South By Southwest (you can still watch it ). "We put everything we had on it," Cornell told the crowd after the performance. "It's the maximum amount of sound you could put on a CD at the time."

Listening to the album in surround sound "is pretty trippy," he says. "It works well because this album has a lot of depth and psychedelic parts to it, and there's a lot of motion, from the spoon solo in Spoonman to the guitar solos in Superunknown and Like Suicide. It really lends itself to the enveloping surround sound mix."
On Disc 3 of the five disc set, devotees can digest a raw, nine minute demo of Like Suicide. The fourth disc of rehearsal recordings collects most Saucony Mens of the Superunknown tracks and a few stray takes.
When the band gathered to record Superunknown, "we were definitely at the height of our creative powers and in our performing playing powers at that stage of the game," says drummer Matt Cameron.
In crafting songs for Superunknown, Cornell unconsciously tapped into a personal vein, he says in liner notes for the five disc edition. In 1990, his friend Andrew Wood, singer for Mother Love Bone and Malfunkshun, died of a heroin overdose.
