´╗┐Tahoe hosting the Olympics and get off Mike Ditka

ONE THING WE DO KNOW is our region has world class winter sports athletes. Reno Tahoe won three gold medals and one bronze in Sochi. Reno's David Wise and South Tahoe's Maddie Bowman swept the golds in the freeski halfpipe's debut in the Olympics. South Tahoe's Jamie Anderson added a gold in first ever slopestyle and Squaw Valley's Julia Mancuso took home a bronze in the combined (her fourth Olympic medal). To put that in perspective, Reno Tahoe, which sent 16 Olympians to Sochi, would rank tied for 20th in the overall medal count (and 11th in golds) if it was its own country. Reno Tahoe won more medal than 67 countries that sent participants to Sochi, including Great Britain, Australia, Latvia and the Ukraine, among others. Reno Tahoe also accounted for one third of the United States' golds in Sochi. We might never get the Winter Games again, but Reno Tahoe will always make an impact.

coalition is targeting for a Winter Games in our region. Should we try and host the Olympics? Why not? The biggest risk is running a huge deficit, like Sochi is doing (it budgeted for $12 billion in operating costs and spent about $51 billion). The Torino games lost money. The Vancouver games broke even. And the Salt Lake City games made roughly $100 million. So, it all comes down to how well you run the games. Reno can't even get working parking meters downtown, so forecasting a seamless transition to hosting a $15 billion event is nave. Of the last 12 Olympics games, only four turned a profit, so there's a risk associated here. skier Bode Miller.

STAYING ON FOOTBALL, MIKE DITKA went off the rails this week, saying of Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford: "I think he can make all the throws. He's a smart kid. I wish he'd put the baseball cap on frontwards instead of backwards all the time." Ditka continued to question Stafford's leadership skills, in part based on his appearance. The old backwards hat has gotten under the skin of coaches for some time. Buck Showalter, when he was the Yankees manager, criticized Ken Griffey Jr. and his respect for the game because he wore a backwards hat. Is this what happens when you get older? You start complaining about trivial things like hat placement? It looks like Ditka, who is 74, has reached the "get off my lawn" stage of his life.

NOW THAT WE'VE ESTABLISHED that we want the Olympic Games, what are the chances we actually get them? There are three things we have that make us a legitimate contender: the ski facilities, hotel rooms and the desire to host the games. With world class ski facilities in the Sierras, Reno Tahoe is a natural fit, plus the area already has more hotel rooms than Salt Lake City had when it hosted the games in 2002. hosted the Olympics. The long break from 2002 to 2026 also plays in Reno Tahoe's favor. lands those games, it's not getting Reebok Girls Shoes

KUDOS TO SOCHI. The Olympics started with media members aghast with their living conditions. Yellow water. No door handles. And one of the Olympic rings failed to light up during the opening ceremonies. But many were worried about the security issues in Russia. Those fears were unfounded. There were no judging issues, the facilities were beautiful and although the weather was warmer than expected (up to 60 degrees some days) there was no shortage of snow. A Games well put on.

REALISTICALLY, THE ODDS RENO TAHOE gets the Olympics is slim. Really slim. But you can say that about any city that's aiming to host the games a decade out. The competition for every Olympics is strong. Our region has plenty of plusses (the ski venues and hotel rooms) and negatives (the infrastructure and stadium venues are nowhere near ready, but that's where the billions of dollars go). Hosting an Olympics has been this region's white whale for a while now. While it's easy to be pessimistic about Reno Tahoe's chance of hosting the Olympics, luring a minor league team to Reno was a white whale for a long time, too, and now we have a state of the art Triple A stadium downtown. There's been some financial issues with that situation (as there would be with hosting the Olympics), but we might as well make our best run at it and if we come up short, so be it.

AS THE WINTER GAMES IN SOCHI come to a close, let's take a look ahead. Way ahead. Like 2026. That's the year the Reno Tahoe Reebok Light

SO, THE 49ERS ALMOST TRADED COACH Jim Harbaugh to the Cleveland Browns for some draft picks, according to a report by ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio. Harbaugh and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke have butted heads over the years, a power struggle in motion, but that trade would have been a shocker. Harbaugh might believe he's underpaid and doesn't have enough power, but why would he want to give up the 49ers' roster for the Browns' roster? Things can't be that bad. The fact discussions got as advanced as they did means Harbaugh at least had some desire to leave San Francisco. The report says Harbaugh ultimately decided not to move on. Perhaps he was just playing a game of chicken to increase his salary, but Cleveland is not where you want to be (as a football Reebok Brown coach and just in general).
